Its aim is to expand access to public facilities for people with disabilities, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to participate fully in community life. But what does this mean for businesses and home construction?<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFQuienes_deben_cumplir\"><\/span><strong>Who must comply?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The ADA states that any existing business that has 15 or more employees must make upgrades to its facilities to comply with ADA rules and regulations. This means that architectural barriers in existing facilities should be removed to the extent possible to facilitate access and functionality for people with disabilities.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Construccion_Nueva_y_Viviendas_Multi-Familiares\"><\/span><strong>New Construction and Multi-Family Housing<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Almost all new construction, with the exception of single-family homes, must be handicap accessible. This includes a wide range of features, such as step-free entrances, wide, accessible doors, and bathrooms that allow wheelchair maneuverability.<\/p>\n<p>In particular, new construction apartments on the ground level are subject to ADA regulations. Curiously, those apartments that are on upper floors are not subject to the same regulations, except with regard to public and common use areas.<\/p>\n<p>Since 1988, construction of multifamily buildings with four or more units must also meet ADA standards.
