Santa Ana Winds Unleash Chaos
Santa Ana winds have wreaked havoc on Los Angeles since Tuesday, sweeping away some 12,000 structures, including homes, apartments and businesses.
Victims and Evacuations
Unfortunately, 13 people have lost their lives. Authorities have ordered the evacuation of more than 153,000 residents.
Affected Area
The fire has scorched an area larger than San Francisco, covering some 145 square kilometers. The hardest hit neighborhoods: Pacific Palisades, Altadena, and areas near Pasadena and the San Fernando Valley.
Fire Control
The Palisades fire, the largest, is at 6% to 8% under control, while Eaton and Kenneth are still fighting. The Hollywood Hills (Sunset fire) is at 100% under control.
Environmental Impact and Health
Air quality is a disaster, with unhealthy indexes of 173 in East LA. Smoke can cause serious heart problems and aggravate asthma. Also watch out for toxics like cyanide and CO2 released by burning homes.
State of Emergency and Security Measures
A state of emergency is in effect across the city and county. With a curfew in place to curb looting, 20 suspects are already under arrest for robbery.
Damage Estimate
Damage costs are estimated at between $135 and $150 billion, although official figures are yet to be released.
